Hi, I’m Sarah Halsey.
I started The Reading, Writing and ESOL Project in
November 2020.
From working with people who have been homeless, I
have learned that many are interested in studying but
often face lots of barriers when they try to do so.
I started The Reading, Writing and ESOL Project because I believe that everyone should be able to improve their reading and writing and English skills if they want to. These skills help people to take control of their lives, communicate, create and do things they enjoy.
The Reading, Writing and ESOL Project aims to make learning and building skills easier for people who would like to do it.
I am the teacher and manager for the project. I have 14 years’ experience of running learning and wellbeing activities in the homelessness sector. This includes 7 years coordinating activities, teaching and providing one to one support for people with experience of homelessness at a day centre in London.
In my career so far, I have taught reading and writing and ESOL in different ways and in different places. I’m a qualified teacher and the qualifications I have are:
-
Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTTLS)
-
Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
-
Diploma in Education and Training (DET)
I have a lot of training and experience in helping people who may have different needs using trauma informed approaches. I also have experience of project management and creating supportive and effective partnerships with different organisations in the community.
